STORYLINE
Set in the future, you as the player command troops of space marines and other fighters as you protect civilian colonists and buildings from aggressive alien beasts as you and your human friends attempt to colonize the galaxy. The missions are progressively more difficult on each level and your goal is to continue spreading human civilization in the galaxy by building up colonial settlements both economically and militarily. It is the humans "manifest destiny" to dominate and populate the universe. Your job is to protect the humans.

VIOLENCE
The game is RTS (Real Time Strategy), which means the action on both sides is taking place at the same time. Starcraft uses the RTS perspective of overseeing a war room map and you are commanding the whole military as its general. The map shows the opposing armies and encampments as well as your fighters and buildings. The game play action dwells on the building up of your military units and sending them to battle alien races. Since this is a strategy game, the thrill of victory doesn’t come from showing blood and gore but comes from outplaying the computer or other human opponent. The battles with the aliens present mild animated combat with traces of blood appearing on the spot that an enemy unit is vanquished. There is a lot of killing, but it’s not graphically intensive.

ILLEGAL/HARMFUL BEHAVIOR
If you buy into the premise that it is the human’s manifest destiny to control the universe, then it is okay to slaughter the aliens who oppose you. If, however, you believe in the aliens right to defend their homelands, the humans are the aggressors. In that case this game is teaching a very harmful attitude.

CONCLUSION
Though Starcraft is not a mindless first person shooter like many popular games, it is still based on violence and tends to glorify war. Starcraft receives 74% (C) [See Rating Definitions] due to the positive aspect of being mentally challenging, while it does not receive a higher score due to its somewhat glorifying of war.
